Indications and Contraindications
The Coonrad/Morrey Total Elbow is indicated for post-traumatic lesions, ankylosed joints, advanced rheumatoid or degenerative arthritis, revision arthroplasty, and instability or loss of motion.
Contraindications include prior infection, paralysis, joint neuropathy, significant hand dysfunction, excessive scarring, and patients whose activities would subject the device to significant stress.
Preoperative Considerations
Surgeons inexperienced in elbow arthroplasty should practice with a fresh amputated or cadaver specimen.
Attention should be given to the need for bone grafting beneath the anterior flange to resist torsional and posteriorly directed forces.
In patients with both shoulder and elbow pathology, the most severely involved joint should be done first.
