Introduction and Purpose
The manual introduces the Welch Allyn FlexiPort Blood Pressure Cuffs (soft, vinyl, and reusable versions), designed for determining blood pressure in conjunction with sphygmomanometers in pediatric through adult patients. The cuffs are not intended for neonate use and should be restricted to sale by healthcare practitioners.
Warnings and Contraindications
WARNING: To avoid potential measurement errors or patient harm, follow the guidelines below:
- Use only approved accessories with the cuffs to prevent measurement errors.
- Ensure the artery index marker is within the indicated range on the cuff for accurate readings.
- Never fit luer lock connectors to the blood pressure tubing to prevent air introduction into a patient’s circulatory system.
- Do not apply cuffs to delicate, damaged skin or limbs used for IV infusion, monitoring skin for irritation.
- Allow space between the patient’s limb and the cuff and minimize movement during readings.
- Check all connection points for an airtight seal before use.
Operation
The FlexiPort cuffs operate like traditional blood pressure cuffs, compatible with both manual and automated sphygmomanometers. Cuff size should be chosen based on the patient’s arm circumference provided on each cuff, within an operational pressure range of 0 to 300 mmHg.
Correct Cuff Usage
The position of the “Artery Index Marker” on the cuff should align within the “Range” stated on the cuff. If the index marker does not match the indicated range, select a larger or smaller cuff accordingly.
Standards and Regulatory Information
Device complies with AAMI/ANSI/EN/ISO 81060-1.2007 requirements for non-invasive sphygmomanometers.
Maintenance and Care
The manual specifies precautions to ensure the longevity and functionality of the device:
- Do not press the cuff with a hot iron or inflate without securing the hook and loop closure.
- Prevent foreign debris from entering the tubes or port on the cuff.
- Avoid using steam or heat for sterilization purposes.
- Do not exceed 250 mmHg with thigh-size disposable cuffs at or above 30°C/86°F.
