Introduction to Retinoscopy

Retinoscopy is a technique for objective refraction of the eye. There are two basic types of retinoscopy: Static retinoscopy and dynamic retinoscopy. This user manual focuses on static retinoscopy.

Features of the Streak Retinoscope

The Welch Allyn No. 18200 3.v Halogen Streak Retinoscope features a unique planetary gear system, allowing for easy adjustment and continuous 360° rotation. It also has a brighter halogen lamp, reducing glare and improving the clarity of the reflex.

Technique

The instrument is operated by adjusting the control sleeve to change the width of the streak and the level of divergence. The sleeve can be raised and lowered to achieve the plano-mirror effect, which reflects divergent rays, or the concave mirror effect, which focuses the light rays.
