Introduction

This guide focuses on the ergonomics of ultrasound procedures, providing advice and guidance to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal pain and discomfort associated with ultrasound work.

Transducer Handling

Hold the transducer correctly to avoid wrist flexion and extension movements, which can increase tension in the hand and wrist tendons. Use a ‘pencil’ grip and adjust your grip to fit the transducer comfortably in your hand.

Scanning Movements

Scan by moving your forearm, not your wrist, to reduce strain on the tendons. Avoid extreme wrist postures and adjust your scanning style to minimize wrist movements.

Arm Posture

Keep your arm close to your side and avoid raising it above 60° to reduce tension in the shoulder tendons. Use the Toshiba Aplio’s adjustable console to minimize stretching and reaching.

Work Environment

Adjust the patient bed and console to reduce twisting and leaning. Consider using a sit-stand chair or saddle chair to improve your posture and reduce strain on your back and pelvis.
