Introduction

Flexible GI endoscopes are reusable medical devices that require special handling after each clinical use to render them safe for subsequent patient procedures.

Reprocessing Steps

The reprocessing procedure can be broken down into four basic steps: Pre-Cleaning, Leak Testing, Cleaning/Rinsing, and High-Level Disinfection/Rinsing/Final Drying.

Pre-Cleaning

Immediately after completion of the procedure, begin pre-cleaning in the examination room to remove patient material, reduce bioburden levels, and prevent residual debris from drying and hardening on instrument surfaces.

Leak Testing

Leak testing is performed in a “cleaning room”/decontamination area to ensure the endoscope is free from leaks.

Cleaning/Rinsing

Cleaning and rinsing are performed in a “cleaning room”/decontamination area using fresh enzymatic detergent solution and water to remove residual debris and detergent.

High-Level Disinfection/Rinsing/Final Drying

High-level disinfection is performed using a liquid chemical germicide, followed by rinsing with sterile water and final drying with 70% alcohol and forced air.

Automated reprocessing using an Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER) is also an option, but it is essential to follow the AER manufacturer’s device-specific instructions and ensure the endoscope is compatible with the AER.
