Overview
The Pyxis MedStation system is an automated medication dispensing system manufactured by Becton, Dickinson and Company (“BD”).
Access and Authentication
Users gain access to Pyxis devices by scanning their fingerprints. The system requires users to enroll by scanning their fingerprints or palm prints to access the system and medication.
BD markets Pyxis devices as superior to other medication-disbursement methods, emphasizing improved precision and accuracy of user access via biometric information.
Biometric Data Collection and Storage
BD collects, stores, and disseminates biometric data, specifically fingerprints, in violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).
Heard alleges that BD failed to inform him or similarly situated individuals that it was collecting, using, or storing their biometric data, and never stated the purpose and length of time for which it was doing so.
