Introduction

A temporary external pacemaker is a device that uses electrical impulses to regulate the heart rate and/or rhythm when the patient’s own intrinsic function is impaired.

Indications for Temporary Pacing

Temporary pacing is indicated for post-cardiac surgery, severe symptomatic bradycardia, and as a prelude to permanent pacing.

Nursing Care

Nurses should only care for children with temporary external pacemakers after receiving necessary theoretical and practical instruction.

Nursing care includes monitoring the child on a cardiac monitor, assessing for capture and sensing of the pacemaker, and monitoring blood pressure, temperature, and tissue perfusion.
