Background

The oncology pharmacy faces increasing demands, and automation is necessary to improve patient safety and efficiency. The current compounding process has multiple potential safety gaps and choke points.

Objective

The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of an automated compounding workflow software solution to improve patient safety, increase the number of oncology treatments, improve documentation, and enhance communication between oncologists, pharmacists, and nurses.

Methods

A compounding workflow software solution was introduced, which included pharmacist verification, gravimetric checks, and step-by-step on-screen instructions. The software supported technicians during compounding and proposed required drug vial sizes, diluents, and consumables. Integration was undertaken between a prescribing module and the compounding module to reduce transcription errors.

Results

Despite an increase in compounding, the output doubled to 14,000 medications per annum without an increase in pharmacy headcount. The use of handheld barcode scanning devices reduced medication administration time from 6 minutes to 41 seconds per item.
