Introduction

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Technology Committee provides reviews of existing and emerging endoscopic technologies that impact the practice of GI endoscopy.

Background

Endoscopic electronic medical record (EEMR) systems have evolved significantly since their creation in the 1980s. Current versions have become sophisticated electronic medical record databases incorporating comprehensive electronic practice management (EPM) software.

Features of EEMR Systems

EEMR systems comprise hardware, including image/video capture workstations, documentation workstations, and network servers. They have minimum system requirements and offer various features such as cloud-based system options, electronic health record (EHR) meaningful use certification, and service contracts.

Endoscopic Reporting Systems

Endoscopic reporting systems (ERS) software modules within EEMR systems allow for the creation of customizable templates based on the user’s practice, rapid procedure note generation, and integration with most dictation software.

Quality Improvement Registries

EEMR systems participate in quality improvement registries, such as the GI Quality Improvement Consortium and the AGA Digestive Health Outcomes Registry, to track endoscopy quality measures.
