Introduction

The Angioseal VIP is a vascular closure device used in endovascular mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke.

Study Overview

A retrospective study was conducted to assess the impact of large-bore sheaths and vascular closure devices on groin complication rates at a comprehensive stroke center over a 10-year period.

A total of 472 patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent mechanical thrombectomy with an 8Fr or larger sheath and balloon guide catheter (BGC) were identified.

Results

The study found a very low rate (0.4-0.8%) of clinically significant groin complications associated with the use of 8Fr and 9Fr sheaths.

Vascular closure devices were used in 97.9% of cases, with the Angioseal VIP being the most common device used.

Conclusion

Concerns for vascular groin complications should not preclude the use of large-bore sheaths and BGCs in the endovascular treatment of stroke.
