Introduction
The Angio-Seal Vascular Closure Device is used to achieve rapid haemostasis and reduce vascular complications after cardiac catheterisation. The device uses a collagen plug to anchor to the anterior vascular wall through a sheath delivery system.
The device is commonly used, with approximately seven million cardiac catheterisations performed per year worldwide.
Risks and Complications
Complications related to the use of VCDs include haematoma, bleeding, arteriovenous fistula, pseudoaneurysm, stenosis, thrombosis, embolisation, and infection. The most serious complication is limb ischaemia due to intra-arterial deposition of collagen.
The study examined the incidence, predictors, and treatment options of critical limb ischaemia (CLI) after Angio-Seal application.
Results
Out of 13,595 coronary procedures, 43 patients (0.3%) developed CLI. Peripheral artery disease and renal insufficiency were identified as independent predictors of CLI after Angio-Seal application.
Treatment options included endovascular or surgical management, with 63% of patients undergoing surgical treatment and 37% undergoing endovascular treatment.
