Description

The ZA Series consists of radial leaded varistors, commonly referred to as metal oxide varistors (MOVs), which are designed to protect low and medium-voltage circuits and systems from transient voltage surges. Typical applications for these varistors include motor control, telecom, automotive systems, solenoid, and power supply circuits. Their primary role is to safeguard circuit board components and ensure the integrity of data within these systems.

Product Range and Features

The ZA Series is diverse, with varistors available in five sizes: 5mm, 7mm, 10mm, 14mm, and 20mm. These varistors cover a wide voltage range, designated as VAC voltage from 4V to 460V and VDC voltage from 5.5V to 615V. The devices do not require derating for ambient temperatures up to 85°C.

The varistors come in two packaging options: tape and reel or bulk pack, with several lead form options available to suit various design requirements. Moreover, they comply with environmental and safety standards, being lead-free and RoHS compliant, as indicated by agency approval marks.

Agency Approvals and Standards

Certifications and compliance with safety standards are important for components like the ZA Series varistors. They have been approved by recognized agencies, accompanied by specific agency file numbers, such as E135010, and for selected parts, E320116 and 116895E.

Absolute Maximum Ratings

The datasheet delineates the absolute maximum ratings for the ZA Series varistors to guide users about the stress levels that, if exceeded, may cause permanent damage to the device. It includes:

  • Continuous Steady State Applied Voltage Range: AC 4 to 460V, DC 5.5 to 615V
  • Transient Peak Pulse Current: 50 to 6500A, with reference to 8/20µs current wave profile
  • Single Pulse Energy Range: 0.1 to 52J, with reference to 10/1000µs current wave
  • Operating Ambient Temperature Range: -55 to +85°C
  • Storage Temperature Range: -55 to +125°C
  • Temperature Coefficient of Clamping Voltage: <0.01% per °C
  • Hi-Pot Encapsulation (insulation resistance): 2500V
  • Coating Insulation Voltage Capability: Must withstand 1000MΩ at a specified DC voltage for one minute per the MIL-STD-202, Method 301

Important Notice

The datasheet cautions against operating the ZA Series varistors above the stipulated ratings, as this may result in irreversible damage. All specifications are subject to change, highlighting the importance of consulting the latest documentation or the Littelfuse website for current information.
