Description
The Teledyne Relays Series 4200/422D and 420DD/422DD are ultraminiature double-pole double-throw (DPDT) relays. They feature magnetic-latching abilities and are known for their fully established reliability in the TO-5 relay category. These relays include discrete diodes for coil suppression and polarity reversal protection, offering a versatile solution for high-density PCB mounting. Their small footprint and low coil power dissipation set them apart in terms of efficiency and adaptability for a range of applications.
Applications and Features
These relays are especially well-suited to environments where minimizing power dissipation is critical. Their design allows for operation with a brief pulse to switch contacts, without requiring external power to maintain their state afterward. This magnetic latching provides a memory-like feature that keeps the relay state consistent even when coil power is removed.
The Series 420/422 is favored for use in RF applications, including handheld radio receivers, due to their exceptional RF switching capabilities for frequencies extending into the UHF spectrum. This is largely attributed to their inherently low intercontact capacitance and contact circuit losses.
Construction and Manufacturing
Teledyne Relays’ Series 420/422 boast a range of construction features and manufacturing techniques to enhance durability and reliability. These include all-welded construction, a unique uni-frame design that delivers both high magnetic efficiency and mechanical rigidity, and a high force-to-mass ratio which offers resistance to shock and vibration. Moreover, advanced cleaning procedures ensure maximum internal cleanliness. The contacts are made of precious metal alloy with gold plating, ensuring reliable high current and dry circuit switching.
Principle of Operation
The operation of the relays is based on magnetic fields controlled by external coils. Energizing one coil generates a magnetic field that opposes the holding flux from a permanent magnet, causing the armature to move and snap against a core, switching the relay state. This position is maintained even after de-energizing the coil, offering efficient state retention. Correct coil polarity is essential for operation, and pulse conditions must meet specified requirements to prevent the relay from reaching a magnetic neutral position.
Environmental and Physical Specifications
The relays can operate in a wide temperature range from -65°C to +125°C and can withstand significant levels of vibration and shock. The hermetically sealed enclosure contributes to their durability, with a maximum weight of 0.10 oz (2.84g).
