Overview of the OMAP-L138 C6000 DSP+ARM Processor
The OMAP-L138 from Texas Instruments is a dual-core system-on-chip (SoC) combining a DSP and ARM processor designed for a variety of applications. It operates at speeds of 375 MHz or 456 MHz, featuring an ARM926EJ-S Core and a C674x VLIW DSP, which supports both fixed- and floating-point operations.
Processor Features and Performance
The ARM core includes Jazelle technology for Java acceleration, a 16KB instruction and 16KB data cache, 8KB of RAM for vector tables, and 64KB of ROM. The accompanying DSP offers numerous instruction set enhancements and boasts performance up to 3648 MIPS and 2746 MFLOPS. Equipped with two levels of cache memory and flexible RAMCache partitioning, the OMAP-L138 is engineered for efficient data handling and maximum performance.
Memory and External Interfaces
Memory options include an external memory interface supporting NOR and NAND, up to 128MB of 16-bit SDRAM, or 256MB of 16-bit DDR2/Mobile DDR SDRAM. Communication with peripherals is made possible through three 16550-type UART modules, an LCD controller, SPIs, MMC/SD interfaces, I2C bus support, and more.
Real-Time Applications and Connectivity
Robust real-time capabilities are key, with the dual-core Programmable Real-Time Unit Subsystem (PRUSS) providing two independent 32-bit RISC cores for handling time-sensitive tasks. The OMAP-L138 also offers a USB 1.1 Host, USB 2.0 OTG, Ethernet MAC, Video Port Interface, and a Universal Parallel Port to cater to a wide range of connectivity requirements.
Multimedia and Security
Multichannel Audio and Buffered Serial Ports, AC97 interface, Telecom Interfaces, and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MAC facilitate multimedia and telecom applications. Security is bolstered with Secure Data I/O for MMC/SD interfaces.
Timers, Control, and Packaging
The OMAP-L138 includes real-time clocks, multiple timers, PWM modules, and enhanced capture units for advanced timing and control. It is available in two different Pb-free Plastic Ball Grid Array packages with different ball pitches.
This datasheet also outlines the OMAP-L138’s software support, including the TI DSP BIOS, Chip Support Library, and DSP Library. An ‘IMPORTANT NOTICE’ section at the end addresses availability, warranty, changes, safety-critical applications, intellectual property matters, and other disclaimers for this TI product.
