Description
The HA Series described in the datasheet consists of industrial high energy Metal-Oxide Varistors (MOVs) manufactured by Littelfuse. These components are particularly designed for secondary surge protection within outdoor settings and service entrances, like distribution panels in buildings, as well as in motor controls and power supplies across various industrial applications, including oil drilling, mining, and transportation fields. The HA Series features robust terminals to facilitate screw mounting, with an alternate “HC” variant suitable for through-hole board mounting or for connections that require soldered leads.
Agency Approvals
The varistors have been certified and approved by recognized safety standards, including Underwriters Laboratories (UL) with an agency file number E320116.
Features
HA Series varistors are lead-free, halogen-free, and meet RoHS compliance. They support a wide operating voltage range from 110Vrms to 750Vrms and feature a considerable energy absorption capability ranging from 170J to 1050J. These devices are also capable of handling high peak pulse currents from 25,000A to 40,000A. With durable terminals, the MOVs can be securely mounted, and no derating is required up to an ambient temperature of 85°C. The “HC” designation indicates trimmed leads for through-hole board mounting.
Absolute Maximum Ratings
The datasheet states the absolute maximum ratings for the HA Series. The continuous steady-state applied voltages span AC voltage ranges from 110Vrms to 750Vrms and DC voltage ranges from 148Vdc to 970Vdc. Peak pulse current capability is between 25,000A to 40,000A for an 8/20µs current wave. The series also offers a single pulse energy range from 160J to 1050J across a 2ms current square wave, with operating ambient temperature ranging from -55°C to +85°C and storage temperature ranging from -55°C to +125°C. The temperature coefficient of the clamping voltage is less than 0.01%/°C.
An important caution note indicates that exposing the device to stresses beyond listed “Absolute Maximum Ratings” may cause permanent damage and that the operation of the device outside of the specified limits in operational sections is not recommended.
Additional Information
The datasheet also provides resources like datasheets, resources for further information, and options for requesting samples. The HA Series has a dielectric (coating insulation resistance) that can withstand a Hi-Pot encapsulation isolation voltage capability with the coating insulation resistance of 1000 MΩ and must withstand the indicated DC voltage for one minute per MIL-STD 202, Method 301.
The datasheet clarifies that specifications are subject to change and the revision date is listed as September 14, 2017.
