Introduction to Littelfuse HA Series MOVs
Littelfuse’s HA Series Metal-Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are transient surge suppressors that provide high energy and secondary surge protection. Designed for use in the service entrance environments of industrial buildings, these surge protectors are ideal for applications such as motor controls and power supplies found in oil drilling, mining, and transportation sectors.
Product Features and Approvals
The HA Series MOVs are lead-free, halogen-free, and RoHS compliant, featuring a wide operating voltage range from 110 Vrms to 750 Vrms, with high energy absorption capability ranging from 170J to 1050J. They are designed to handle high peak pulse currents from 25,000 A to 40,000 A. Furthermore, they incorporate rigid terminals for secure mounting and are available in a trimmed version, designated “HC,” for through-hole board mounting. These varistors can operate without derating up to an ambient temperature of 85°C.
Agency Approvals
These devices have received UL1449 approval, confirming their reliability and safety for industrial use.
Ratings and Specifications
The varistors come in two disc sizes, 32mm and 40mm. They offer a continuous AC voltage range of 110 to 750 Vrms and a DC voltage range of 148 to 970 Vdc. Maximum clamping voltages at specific current tests are also provided, ranging from 156V to 561V. The range for single pulse energy extends from 160J to 1050J, while the operating and storage temperature ranges are -55°C to +85°C and -55°C to +125°C, respectively. The varistors’ coating insulation resistance is a minimum of 1000 MΩ.
Absolute Maximum Ratings and Part Numbers
The varistors should not be exposed to stresses above their absolute maximum ratings as it may result in permanent damage. The HA Series includes various part numbers differentiated by their energy and peak current capabilities (e.g., V881HA32, V881HA40), making selections more efficient for specific requirements and applications.
Compatibility and Caution
Caution is advised when handling the HA Series MOVs as inappropriate stresses beyond the specified maximum ratings can lead to irreparable damage. The suitability of varistor application includes conditions up to 85°C without derating, which emphasizes the robustness of these components in various high-demand industrial environments.
