The FAN2108 TinyBuck™ is a highly efficient synchronous buck regulator designed for a range of applications including servers, high-end computing systems, graphics cards, battery-powered equipment, and set-top boxes. This compact solution is capable of handling an 8 A output current and operates with a wide input voltage range of 3 V to 24 V. The output voltage range is equally impressive, allowing for 0.8 V up to 80% of the input voltage.
One of the key features of this device is the inclusion of both synchronous MOSFETs and a controller/driver within a single package, which significantly reduces the requirement for external components and space. The integrated design boasts a peak efficiency of over 95%, with a programmable frequency operation ranging from 200 KHz to 600 KHz. An additional feature aiding in the efficiency of the design is the internal Schottky diode on the low-side MOSFET.
Design flexibility is further enhanced through external compensation, a programmable current limit, and the inclusion of a power-good signal. These features, along with the summing current mode modulator that utilizes lossless current sensing, provide robust current feedback and protection mechanisms, including over-current protection. Voltage feedforward enables the device to adapt to a wide range of input voltages.
The FAN2108 is created using Fairchild’s advanced BiCMOS power process. This integrates low RDS(ON) internal MOSFETs within a thermally efficient MLP package, allowing for high power dissipation in a compact package. Safety protections built into the device include under-voltage, over-voltage, and thermal shutdown mechanisms to prevent damage during fault conditions. The internal soft-start feature is particularly beneficial for point-of-load applications as it prevents the discharge of pre-biased output during startup.
The product is available in a 5 x 6 mm, 25-Pin, 3-Pad molded leadless package (MLP) and can be ordered under two part numbers—FANZ1O8MPX for the standard temperature range of -10°C to 85°C, and FANZIO8EMPX for the extended temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. Both variants are provided in a tape and reel packaging method suitable for high-volume production environments.
To assist designers in utilizing the FAN2108, Fairchild provides related application notes, including AN-8022, which offers guidance on using the TinyCalc™ calculator for point-of-load regulation. This diverse range of application notes and supporting material ensures that engineers can readily incorporate this buck regulator into their designs with minimized effort and maximized efficiency.
