Overview

The 3M™ Four-Wall Header 3000 Series includes straight and right-angle latch/ejector headers that are designed for board-to-board connections. They include features such as a 3M 5 N3518 polarizing key and centerbump polarization for secure mating, optional polarizing posts, and high-temperature insulator material suitable for lead-free soldering operations including “paste in hole” techniques. Specific solder tail options are provided for different applications.

Physical Characteristics

Physical details of the connectors include an insulator made of glass-filled polyester (PCT) with a UL94V-0 flammability rating, color-coded in black. The contacts are made of copper alloy with a nickel under plating of 100 microinches (2.54µm) on average, along with an overall wiping area plated with 30 microinches (0.76µm) of gold on average. The solder tails can be tin-lead or matte tin (as indicated in the ordering information), and the headers are marked with the 3M logo, part identification, and orientation triangle.

Electrical Characteristics

The current rating follows the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) standard: 5.00A for a single powered contact, 3.00A for 6 powered contacts, and 1.75A when all contacts are powered. The conditions for this rating involve a maximum temperature rise of 30°C as per EIA 364-070 Method 2, with a 20% de-rating. Insulation resistance is greater than 1 x 10^9 ohms at 500 VDC and the withstanding voltage is 1000 VRMS at sea level. UL current and voltage ratings are 10A for all lines powered and 125V, respectively.

Environmental Characteristics

The operating temperature is rated from -55°C to +105°C, with a process rating of 260°C per J-STD-020 for single-pass soldering. Moisture Sensitivity Level is specified per J-STD-020 (at 30°C, unconfirmed endpoint).

For ordering, various configurations are indicated by a part number consisting of alphanumeric coding which specifies certain attributes such as high temperature, plating requirements, pin configuration, and solder tail options. For example, the presence of specific tin plating on the tails or the use of gold flash indicates different series within the product line.
