The automatic transmission of the ZF 6HP26 has six forward gears and one reverse gear. It has an external cooling circuit to prevent overheating of the transmission oil. The transmission oil is filled for life at the manufacturer and does not normally require servicing. However, if an oil leak occurs, the transmission oil should be added and the leak repaired. The workshop manual provides instructions for checking and filling the transmission oil, as well as for repairing the Mechatronik unit and gearbox. The manual also includes specifications, torque figures, and warnings for working with the transmission.

Transmission Oil Check/Fill

The transmission oil level should be checked by starting the engine, removing the fill plug, and waiting for the oil to drain. The oil level should be between the high and low marks on the dipstick. If the level is low, the transmission oil should be added and the fill plug replaced. The transmission oil should not be overfilled.

Warning

Do not breathe exhaust fumes, as they contain carbon monoxide, which can cause unconsciousness and death. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses when working with the transmission. Make sure the transmission is cool before starting repairs.
