Introduction

The Toyota 86 has generated immense interest without headline-grabbing power, top speed, or exotic materials. Priced from just $29,990, the 86 will shake up the predominantly front-drive hot hatch segment with its unique driving flavour.

Design and Development

The Toyota 86 was designed to be a unique sports car, with a brief to create an affordable, mass-produced sports car. The project was greenlit in 2007, and Toyota searched for a suitable chief engineer to lead the project. Tetsuya Tada was chosen, and he spent the next year researching and defining the project.

The 86’s design was driven by packaging that prioritized a low centre of gravity and low bonnet, yet in an exceptionally stiff structure. The styling was also driven by aerodynamic efficiency (Cd 0.27) and little changed from the early full-sized scale models.
