The 928’s timing belt and tensioner system is a critical subsystem that drives the camshafts, water pump, and oil pump. A timing belt failure can be disastrous on later models, causing major engine damage.

Timing Belt Replacement

The factory-recommended replacement interval is 60,000 miles, but some owners recommend replacing it every 40,000 miles and/or every four years, whichever comes first.

DIY vs. Shop Job

Replacing the timing belt is possible for a competent DIY owner, but it requires access to the shop manual and special tools. DIY cost is around $250-$300, while a shop job costs $500-$1,000.

Additional Checks

While performing the timing belt replacement, it’s a good idea to inspect and replace the accessory drive belts, as well as inspecting the distributor caps and rotors on 32-valve engines.
