Introduction
The purpose of this technical bulletin is to address customer complaints of high oil consumption in Volkswagen vehicles.
Technical Background
Oil consumption is a normal part of engine operation, and the rate of consumption varies depending on several factors, including engine type, quality and viscosity of oil, RPM, ambient temperature, and road conditions.
Service Procedure
Before testing or repairing, explain the technical background to the customer. Visually inspect the engine for signs of leaks and repair as necessary. Perform an oil consumption test using the VAS 6150/X or VAS 6160/X tester, and report the results to the Volkswagen Technical Assistance Center (TACS).
Warranty Information
If the test results show oil consumption within the permissible tolerance, another oil consumption test on the same engine will not be covered under warranty within the next 25,000 miles (40,000 km).
