Investigation Overview
This report documents a crash investigation involving a 2010 Dodge Avenger and a 2017 Ford Flex. The crash occurred on a three-lane state highway in Missouri in the afternoon hours in August 2018. The Dodge was traveling southbound when its driver lost control and struck the Ford, which was traveling northbound.
Injuries and Occupants
Both front row occupants of the Dodge were fatally injured. The 3-year-old male occupant in the second-row right seat was restrained in a safety seat and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the Ford sustained moderate injuries, and the front right occupant, a 73-year-old female, sustained serious injuries.
Child Restraint System
The investigation focused on the role of the child restraint system (CRS) in mitigating injuries. A safety seat was used in the forward-facing orientation in the second-row right seat. The CRS was used by the 3-year-old male occupant and helped to minimize his injuries.
