Background
This report documents the on-site investigation of the non-deployment of side air bags in a 2017 BMW X5 that was involved in a crash and the injuries sustained by the driver.
The crash occurred on a north/south State highway in Oregon in December 2016, involving three vehicles: a 2017 BMW X5, a 2006 Saturn Ion, and a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Crash Details
The BMW was being driven northbound by a belted 37-year-old female. The Saturn crossed the centerline and entered the northbound lanes, causing a series of events that resulted in the BMW departing the roadway and striking a fence.
None of the BMW’s air bags deployed during the crash, and the driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation found that the relatively low lateral delta-V caused by the vehicle-to-vehicle impact was likely below the threshold for triggering a side air bag deployment.
