Fuel Gauge Issue

The fuel gauge may inaccurately drop to empty (E) and trigger the low fuel light, especially when the gauge is at or below the quarter (1/4) tank mark.

Cause and Recommendation

This condition is normal and no repairs are necessary. It is caused by the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) buffering the fuel gauge signal.

For automatic transmissions, no buffering occurs in park or neutral. For manual transmissions, the fuel gauge is buffered in all gears and neutral, with a timer that switches between “fast” and “slow” filters based on clutch depression.

Important Note

GM bulletins are intended for professional technicians, not for do-it-yourselfers. They provide information to assist in the proper service of a vehicle and should not be assumed to apply to every vehicle.
