Safety Recall Information
This safety recall affects certain Toyota vehicles produced from 2001 to 2007, including the Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, and Sequoia models. The recall is related to the front passenger airbag inflator module, which may have been manufactured with a potential for moisture intrusion and subsequent rupture.
Campaign Overview
The remedy for this safety recall has been launched in phases due to limited parts availability. The phases began in late June 2014 and will continue through 2016. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notifications and mailings from Toyota detailing the recall and repair process.
Remedy and Timing
The remedy involves replacing the front passenger airbag inflator module at no charge to the vehicle owner. The replacement process will begin in phases, with certain regions and states receiving the remedy earlier than others. Dealers are responsible for verifying coverage and performing the repair procedure outlined in the Technical Instructions (TIS).
Dealership Responsibilities
Dealers are responsible for storing old inflators and airbag assemblies on a pallet until they accumulate 100 units or 30 days, whichever comes first. They must also apply a return address label to the outside of each returned airbag-inflator box and provide documentation to Takata for pickup. Dealers will need to complete E-Learning training modules and ensure technicians are properly certified to perform the repair.
Shipping and Return Process
New parts return shipping process will be effective starting July 1, 2015. Dealers will be required to apply a return address label to the outside of each returned airbag-inflator box, store old inflators and airbag assemblies on a pallet, and contact Takata for pickup. A sublet claim of 0.20 cents per vehicle may be applied to each inflator replacement warranty claim starting July 1, 2015.
