This technical service bulletin provides information on a safety recall campaign for 2001-2004MY Optima vehicles produced from 10/6/2000 to 11/19/2003, which were registered in states that use heavy amounts of road salt.
Owners of affected vehicles are being notified to schedule an appointment with a Kia dealer to inspect and repair or replace the subframe due to corrosion. The vehicle inspection procedure involves checking for any external signs of severe corrosion or perforation, and tapping the subframe to check for any material nearing perforation.
Important: Make sure to inspect for any corrosion cavities throughout the subframe, including the sides.
If the subframe is found to be corroded, it must be replaced according to TSB GEN 026. The repair process involves using a 40 mm hole-saw to drill holes for the front and rear subframe sites, and deburring the holes to ensure accurate judgment of the subframe material thickness.
The vehicle owner is not charged for this repair, but must have the vehicle repaired before selling or delivering it.
