Boning System
This chapter of the workshop manual provides information on the braking system of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Silver Cloud II, Phantom Bentley S1, Bentley S2, and Bentley Continental S2 cars.
Data and General Description
The braking system is described, including the specifications of the brake linings, drum diameter, and wheel cylinder bores.
The system features a servo motor, which is engaged by the foot brake pedal and operates the hydraulic master cylinder(s) and supplies the additional effort applied to the rear brakes.
Rear Brakes
The rear brakes are described, including the use of a leading and trailing shoe expanded by a double-acting wheel cylinder and mechanical flat wedge-type expander.
The shoes are interconnected by special equal-wear linkage, which reduces the self-wrapping effect of the leading shoes and allows the use of a single shake-back stop.
Handbrake
The handbrake is described, including its operation and linkage to the rear brakes through a mechanical linkage.
The handbrake controls are also connected to the foot brake controls, and the operation lever is linked to a second lever that is connected to an intermediate lever and then to the rear axle.
Hydraulic Systems
The hydraulic system is described, including the use of hydraulic master cylinders and the piping and fittings that connect the components.
Check valves were introduced on early SI cars to prevent the ingress of air at the wheel cylinder, and the hydraulic system is designed to maintain balance between the front and rear brakes.
Service Operations
The chapter provides information on servicing the brakes, including the recommended intervals for brake inspections and adjustments.
It also provides information on special tools required for the job, such as the RH.322 brake and servo testing lever and the RH.417 brake and servo testing lever (dual cylinder system).
