General Information

This service instruction leaflet provides guidance on the overhaul of starter motor drives for Rolls-Royce 20 HP, 25/30 HP, and Wraith models.

Important Notes

Friction drive is embodied in the starter motor to prolong the life of the starter pinion and flywheel teeth. Excessive oil in the clutch pit can cause slipping of the starter drive.

Removal and Disassembly

The starter drive can be withdrawn from the rear of the car, and disassembled to inspect and overhaul the friction discs.

Inspection and Overhaul of Friction Discs

Ferodo washers are supplied for the 3-disc and 5-disc drives, and modifications are necessary to ensure correct slipping torque.

Re-assembly Procedure

The re-assembly procedure involves careful cleaning and lubrication of parts, and correct assembly of the friction discs and buffer spring.
