Important Notes
The ignition and valve timing marks on the 25/30 and Wraith are stamped on the Borg and Beck clutch housing. It is necessary to transfer these markings to the new clutch in the same relative positions when replacing the clutch.
All irrelevant marks should be erased by peening or filing to avoid possible confusion.
Clutch Types
The clutches fitted to all Rolls-Royce cars (excluding Silver Ghost series) are of the Single Dry Plate type. The earlier clutches were of Rolls-Royce design and manufacture, which were superseded by Borg and Beck assemblies of standard type.
Two types of clutch plates were used: the rigid type and the Spring Drive type, which was fitted only to 20/25 n.p. chassis between GXB-1 and GRP-41 inclusive.
Clutch Construction
The clutch plate is located between two clutch linings, both of which are riveted to carrier rings. The front ring is bolted to the flywheel face, while the rear ring constitutes the pressure plate.
Four levers are provided for clutch withdrawal purposes, and the clutch plate is accurately located relative to the friction linings by means of ball journals on either side of the hub.
