Diesel Engine Information
This guide provides information specific to diesel engine equipped vehicles.
Diesel engines are equipped with a DPF (diesel particulate filter) and an SCR (Selective Reduction Catalyst) system, which reduces NOx emissions using Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).
Normal Operating Conditions
Diesel engines can create noises that may seem unusual, such as clicking, ticking, or knocking, but these are normal.
The engine may idle at high speeds (up to 1100 rpm) while in Park (P) for engine warm-up and emissions.
Fluid leaks and odors are normal during the first few regeneration cycles.
Starting the Engine
Diesel engines are controlled by a PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and use ceramic glow plugs for quick starts.
Engine cranking may be delayed in cold temperatures, and the use of an engine block heater is recommended for routine operation under -10°F (-23°C).
