Tapping Noise from Dash Area

This service bulletin addresses a tapping noise coming from the dash area when the engine is running at operating temperature. The noise sounds like a screwdriver being tapped on a workbench and may require engine RPM of about 3000 to be heard.

Diagnostic and Repair Procedure

The procedure involves determining if the noise is coming from the heater core and then “back-flushing” the heater core to remove gray silicone debris. The diagnostic steps include:

  • Confirming the noise is coming from the heater core
  • Draining the cooling system and pinching off the heater core inlet and outlet hoses
  • Back-flushing the heater core until silicone debris is found
  • Reconnecting the heater core hoses and refilling the cooling system
  • Running the engine at operating temperature to confirm the noise is gone

Important: Qualified technicians should follow the entire service procedure to ensure successful completion of the repair. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a quick idea of the work to be performed.
