General Description

The 2005 Lotus Elise features a 1.8-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder engine supplied by Toyota Motor Corporation, designated as 2ZZ-GE.

The engine has a lightweight alloy cylinder block with integral cylinder walls, a forged steel crankshaft, and iron and tin coated pistons.

Key Features

The engine features VVTL-i (Variable Valve Timing and Lift-intelligent) technology, which allows for advanced or retarded inlet valve timing and increased lift of both inlet and exhaust valves at high engine speed.

The engine also has a trochoid type oil pump, a single row chain-driven timing system, and a water pump mounted at the left-hand front of the block.

The intake manifold draws air from a single throttle body with a cable-controlled butterfly valve, and fuel is supplied via a one-way flow system with a pressure regulator contained inside the fuel tank.

Variable Valve Timing and Lift

The VVTL-i system features a hydraulic hub connecting the chain sprocket to the inlet camshaft, allowing for variable valve timing and lift.

The system monitors engine speed, intake air volume, throttle position, and water temperature to determine the optimum cam phasing for the particular running conditions.
