The History of Lotus
Lotus, a marque synonymous with speed, innovation, and success, was founded by Colin Chapman.
Chapman’s first car, the Mark VI, was delivered in 1953, and by 1955, he was able to focus on racing full-time.
Formula 1 Success
Lotus entered Formula 1 in 1958 with the Lotus 16, and by 1960, they had followed Cooper’s lead with a rear-engined layout.
Jim Clark, a young Scotsman, joined the works F1 team and went on to win 25 F1 races, a record at the time.
The Lotus 25, with its aircraft-style monocoque body shell, was a breakthrough, and Clark won the 1963 and 1965 championships.
The Lotus 49, with its Cosworth DFV engine, was another sensation, and Clark won first time out at the Dutch GP in 1967.
The team continued to innovate, with the Lotus 72, which won championships in 1970 and 1972.
The Lotus 78, with its ground-hugging ‘skirts’, introduced the concept of ‘ground effects’, and the Lotus 79 consolidated the lessons learnt.
Mario Andretti took six wins, and Peterson two, and again Lotus wrapped up Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles.
