Critical Safety Information
Before starting the engine, ensure you are familiar with the precautions shown under ‘Catalytic Converter’ page 101.
On diesel models, the starter switch sequence is different. Check the battery charging, oil pressure, and engine malfunction indicator warning lights should extinguish as soon as the engine is running.
Starting Procedure
Press the accelerator pedal half-way down while operating the starter, do not pump the accelerator pedal during starting.
Ensure the starter motor is not operated for more than 15 seconds and release the accelerator pedal as soon as the engine fires.
Tips for Starting in Cold Weather
In cold weather, depress the clutch pedal while starting and hold it down until the engine is running to reduce the load on the battery.
Never start or leave the engine running in an unventilated building as exhaust gases are poisonous and contain carbon monoxide.
