This bulletin provides information on the OnStar@ cellular communication upgrade for GM vehicles in Canada. The upgrade is necessary to ensure continued OnStar@ service as Canadian wireless service providers plan to decommission their 2G CDMA network by 2015.

Eligible Vehicles

All GM vehicles built in 2000 and after, and equipped with digital hardware, are eligible for the upgrade.

Upgrade Process

Customers will receive a letter from OnStar@ with instructions for the upgrade process. The process includes accepting OnStar@’s “User Terms, Privacy Statement and Software Terms,” purchasing a one-year OnStar@ service plan, and scheduling an appointment with a dealership for hardware installation and activation.

Dealer Responsibilities

Dealers will receive OnStar@ hardware upgrade kits for affected new vehicle inventory beginning spring 2015. Technicians will install the kits, program the module using the Service Programming System (SPS), and confirm activation.

Customer Hardware Upgrade

To complete the hardware upgrade, dealerships will: direct customer questions to OnStar@, verify VIN and customer information, complete installation of hardware, activate the hardware using SPS, and confirm successful activation.
