The purpose of this bulletin is to inform technicians of the conditions that may occur on certain vehicles equipped with diesel engines and the importance of regular cleaning of the diesel particulate filter (DPF). The DPF will clean itself as part of normal operation, but under certain driving conditions, such as extended idling or stop-and-go traffic, the DPF may not be able to clean itself.

Messages Displayed in the Driver Information Center (DIC)

When a DPF cleaning is required, one of the following messages will be displayed in the DIC:

  • CLEAN EXHAUST FILTER SEE OWNERS MANUAL NOW
  • CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER KEEP DRIVING UNTIL MESSAGE IS CLEARED
  • CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER CONTINUE DRIVING
  • DIESEL PARTIC FILTER IS FULL CONTINUE DRIVING
  • DIESEL PARTIC (Particulate) FILTER IS FULL CONTINUED DRIVING MANDATORY

Note: The message and responding to it is crucial, as ignoring it and continuing to drive with the warning message ON and the exhaust filter not being cleaned as required will eventually result in the malfunction indicator lamp illuminating, the ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED message displaying, and dealer service being necessary.

Important Steps

The following steps must be taken to ensure proper cleaning of the DPF:

  • Clear the message by driving the vehicle at more than 50 kph (30 mph) until the message clears.
  • Familiarize the customer with the operation of the DPF system by reviewing the Diesel Engine Supplement and the operation section in the Owner’s Manual.
  • Perform the Diagnostic System Check to determine if DTC P2463 is set.
  • If DTC P2463 is set, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List Vehicle in SI and proceed to Step 3.
  • If DTC P2463 is not set, proceed to Step 3 and inform the customer as indicated.

Conclusion: Regular cleaning of the DPF is crucial for the proper operation and longevity of the vehicle. By following these steps and being aware of the messages displayed, technicians can assist in ensuring that the DPF is cleaned regularly, preventing potential damage and maintaining the overall health of the vehicle.
