Fuses and Relays in Fiat 124 Spider

The Fiat 124 Spider uses European-style ceramic fuses, also known as “bullet fuses,” which can be difficult to find, especially the 3-amp size.

Fuse boxes are located under the dash to the driver’s left of the steering column, and additional fuses were added outside the box using separate in-line fuse holders in the harness.

Fuse Maintenance

Ceramic fuses age and oxidize, causing resistance, and should be replaced every 30 years. Owners can maintain fuses by spinning them in their holders to make a fresh contact surface and checking for looseness.

Relay Background

The Fiat 124 Spider uses micro-relays that can handle accessories up to 30 amps and can be unplugged for testing or replacement. Relays are located in various positions, including under the hood, under the dash, and in a drop-down relay tray under the glovebox.

The relay tray contains relays for fuel injection, automatic transmission, power windows, and other systems, and is an important component to maintain.
