Background
The German government proposed a policy to make automobile manufacturers responsible for the final disassembly and disposal of their products, as well as ensuring that most of each vehicle is recycled.
BMW’s Response
BMW’s recycling group (T-RC) was tasked with determining the company’s response to the draft legislation. The group, led by Dr.-Ing. Horst-Henning Wolf and Dr.-Ing. Harald A. Franze, briefed the German Environment Ministry on BMW’s environmental program and the current vehicle recycling situation.
Vehicle Recycling Industry
The vehicle recycling industry in Germany is composed of dismantlers and shredders. Dismantlers separate and sell used components, while shredders process and reclaim component and body materials. The industry faces challenges due to the increasing diversity of materials used in vehicle manufacture, making disassembly more complicated and costly.
German Solid Waste Situation
Germany is struggling with increasing per capita waste generation and a populace that is increasingly intolerant of traditional methods of waste disposal. The country is shifting towards more creative solutions, including recycling and waste-to-energy incineration.
