Introduction
The author’s fascination with Bentley cars began with the exploits of the Bentley Boys and eventually led to the purchase of a 1956 S1 Bentley.
The Car’s History
The car, B9SCM, was delivered in July 1956 to J. Sutherland and had a rich history, including being shipped to the United States and later returning to New Zealand.
Restoration Process
The author embarked on a meticulous restoration process, which involved stripping the car to its bare metal, repairing rust areas, and replacing the headlining, doors, windows, and seals.
The paintwork was a significant challenge, with the need to remove humidity bumps and repair the bodywork. The car was eventually painted in its original black-pearl over shell grey color scheme.
The interior was re-trimmed with new leather and carpets, and the dashboard was restored to its original condition.
The chroming process was also a significant undertaking, with the need to re-polish and re-plate the hubcaps and over-riders multiple times to achieve a satisfactory result.
Conclusion
After a year-long restoration process, the car was finally completed, with the author sourcing a book on Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley S1 to complete the restoration.
