Towing Basics

The 2024 Ford Edge is designed for towing, but it’s essential to follow proper towing procedures to ensure safety. The vehicle’s towing capacity varies based on the engine configuration, axle ratio, and Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR).

Trailer Towing Selector: The Edge requires specific equipment for towing, including the Class II Trailer Tow Package (536) for trailers over 1,500 pounds. The package includes a trailer wiring harness, hitch receiver, and trailer sway control.

Frontal Area Limitation

The maximum trailer frontal area for an Edge/trailer combination is 20 sq. ft. without the Class II Trailer Tow Package and 30 sq. ft. with the package. Exceeding this limitation may reduce the towing vehicle’s performance.

Hitch Receiver Weight Capacity: The hitch receiver’s weight-carrying capacity is 3,500 pounds, with a maximum tongue load of 350 pounds.

Towing Safety

Proper cargo and weight distribution are crucial for safe towing. The load must be balanced, with approximately 60% of the cargo weight in the front half of the trailer and 40% in the rear.

Tire Pressure: Proper tire pressure is essential for towing. Underinflated tires can overheat and fail, while overinflated tires may wear unevenly and compromise traction.
