The 2019 Ram 1500 eTorque brings hybrid technology to light trucks, offering a small increase in mpg when fuel economy is in the teens. The system is undetectable in operation and invisible to onlookers, making it a seamless addition to the pickup.

E Torque System

The eTorque system uses a liquid-cooled motor for the V-6 and an air-cooled motor for the V-8. The system adds 12 horsepower and 39 lb-ft for the V-6 and 16 horsepower and 49 lb-ft for the V-8, with the output multiplied through a belt drive to create a 90-lb-ft assist for the V-6 and 130 lb-ft for the V-8.

Fuel Economy

The eTorque system adds just 90 pounds of mass in V-8 applications and 105 pounds with the V-6. The system also includes fuel-saving technologies such as variable intake-valve lift and cam phasers, cylinder deactivation, and active noise canceling.

Handling and Ride

The Ram 1500 eTorque has a truckish handling, but it doesn’t scream two and a half tons, and the ride is smooth and carlike. The coil-spring rear suspension eliminates head toss, and the truck is remarkably quiet on the road, with a sound meter reading of 67 decibels at 70 mph.
