Trailer Towing Information
Before towing, ensure your vehicle is properly equipped with the required trailer towing package and hitch receiver. The maximum loaded trailer weight and axle ratio must be considered to avoid exceeding the vehicle’s Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR).
Trailer Brake Systems
There are three types of trailer brake systems: Electronically Controlled Brakes, Electric-Over-Hydraulic (EOH) Trailer Brakes, and Surge Brakes. Ensure the trailer brake system conforms to state regulations.
Towing Safely
Follow basic rules for safe towing, including proper weight distribution, acceleration, and braking techniques. Downshift the transmission to assist braking on steep downgrades and use tow/haul mode to optimize fuel economy.
Additional Tips
Regularly check engine oil, tire pressure, and brake pads. Use safety chains and ensure the trailer is properly secured to the vehicle. Practice turning, stopping, and backing up in an open area before heading out on a trip.
