Overview of Body Features
The 2014 RLX & Sport Hybrid Series features a Next-Generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, with 55% high tensile strength steel and extensive aluminum components for weight reduction and improved fuel efficiency.
Body Construction and High-Strength Steel Content
Steel parts are color-coded based on their tensile strength in megapascals (MPa), with high strength steel (HSS) defined as any steel with a tensile strength of 340 MPa or higher.
Steel repair and welding procedures vary depending on the tensile strength of the parts involved.
1,500 MPa (HOT STAMP) Steel Locations
1,500 MPa steel is used in various parts, including the front inner upper pillar, front pillar upper stiffener, roof side stiffener, and center pillar upper stiffener.
Aluminum Parts & Repairability
Aluminum alloy construction is used in parts such as the front subframe, tunnel floor bar, steering hanger beam, rear bumper beam, hood, front & rear door skins, front bumper beam, and front fender.
Repairability issues include not repairing damaged front subframe or bumper beams, and requiring dedicated aluminum repair facilities and tools for minor damage to the aluminum hood.
