GM Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Relearn Procedures

This manual provides relearn procedures for GM vehicles produced after 1995 with Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) systems.

Types of VTD Systems:

Three types of VTD systems require specific relearn procedures:

  • Vehicle Anti-Theft System (VATS)
  • Passkey
  • Passkey II (Resistive Chip Ignition Key)
  • Passlock (Coded Lock Cylinder)
  • Passkey III (Transponder Ignition Key)

Relearn Procedures:

Each system has a unique relearn procedure that must be completed before the engine starts or even cranks.

Procedures include:

  • Inserting the ignition key and turning it to the ON position
  • Waiting for a specified time period
  • Turning the ignition switch to the OFF position
  • Repeating the process for a specified number of cycles
