Introduction

This study explores the combination of Quantified Self (QS) data from internet-enabled smart scales with social media data from Twitter to predict a user’s weight.

Methodology

Data was collected from 897 Twitter users who connected their Withings smart scales to their Twitter accounts. The data included tweets, self-descriptions, and social media interactions.

Results

The study found that social media data can predict a user’s average weight with an R-squared value of around 25%. Additionally, weekly and monthly patterns of QS behavior were discovered, such as a peak of weigh-in activity on Saturdays and weight increase over Christmas.

Conclusion

The combination of QS data and social media data has great potential to improve personalized health care.
