Introduction
This article is a personal recollection of the author’s time as an engineering apprentice in Belper and Derby during World War II.
Evacuation to Belper
When World War II was declared, Rolls-Royce’s engineering and clerical staff were moved from Derby to Belper, where several properties were requisitioned to accommodate them.
The author, Reginald J. Spencer, joined the company in 1940 and was involved in the war-time activities of Clan Foundry, which became an important contributor to the war effort.
Clan Foundry
Clan Foundry was a derelict site that was leased by Rolls-Royce and became operational in 1932, producing small cast iron goods.
During the war, the site was used for aero engine repair, and the drawing office staff helped to strip engines on Sundays.
Early Work
The author was transferred to Clan Foundry in 1941 and worked on stripping dirty engines, which was dirty and arduous work.
The site was also used for development work on the mounting of a 40 mm aircraft cannon.
