Trailer Towing Selector

The 2018 Explorer has various engine and transmission options that affect its towing capacity. The maximum loaded trailer weight ranges from 2,000 to 5,000 pounds, depending on the engine and transmission.

Required Equipment

For trailers over 2,000 pounds, a Class II or Class III Trailer Tow Package is required. This package includes a hitch receiver, engine oil cooler, and wiring harness.

Frontal Area Considerations

The frontal area of the trailer affects the towing performance. The maximum trailer frontal area is 40 square feet with the Class III Trailer Tow Package.

Trailer Braking Systems

There are three types of trailer braking systems: electronically controlled brakes, electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) brakes, and surge brakes. The Ford factory-installed Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) is compatible with EOH brakes.

Towing Safely

Before towing, ensure the trailer is properly connected, and the vehicle is equipped with the necessary equipment. When towing, use caution on hills, and downshift to assist braking. Regularly check the vehicle’s engine oil and tire pressure.
