Background
This report documents the on-site investigation of an alleged rupture of the driver’s frontal air bag inflator of a 2002 Honda CR-V that resulted in fatal injuries to the driver.
Crash Summary
The crash occurred on a straight, two-lane U.S. highway in January 2016. The Honda was a 4-door SUV equipped with dual-stage frontal air bags and front-seat-mounted side impact air bags.
The crash involved the Honda, a 2007 Ford Taurus, and a 2013 Lexus ES 350. The Ford crossed into the southbound lane, striking the frontal corner of the Honda, deploying both of the Honda’s frontal air bags and the driver’s seat-mounted side impact air bag.
The Honda came to final rest in a ditch on the west side of the road, and the driver sustained critical injuries and was pronounced deceased. The front row passenger sustained incapacitating injuries and was hospitalized.
