Introduction
This manual serves as a training and reference guide for operators at the SDSU Imaging Center, ensuring safety protocols are understood and followed during MRI experiments.
Operators must attend a safety training course, complete an operator training program, and have their project approved by the Imaging Center Director or be paired with a Principle Investigator (PI) to begin scanning.
The Magnetic Resonance Environment
MRI uses static magnetic fields, slowly changing magnetic fields, and RF electromagnetic fields, making it a safe imaging technique when standard safety procedures are followed.
The strong magnetic field and RF transmit field have the potential to cause injury under special circumstances.
The magnetic field is always on, even when the magnet is not in use, and its strength can exert an extremely strong force on ferromagnetic materials.
